Americans had lived pretty much free of most British constraints and enjoyed their support and protection. They were not taxed for it, and livings of average colonists were usually better than that of average British. However, the situation had started to change after the Seven Years’ War. The British government faced with the financial problems. They needed to keep the troops on the west frontier which burdened their financial situation even more. Britain decided to tax for the protection in America in order to solve this problem. The way to the revolutionary war of America was caused by people’s frustration toward the British government.
The British government passed laws in order to solve the problems of debt. The Navigation Laws were laws which contained the idea of mercantilism. These laws allowed colonies to trade only using the British ships. Some Navigation Acts since 1763 were passed later to enforce the Navigation Laws restrictively
Smugglers grew greatly, and they also became the rich who were the important part of American economy. The Sugar Act of 1764 burdened people increasing the duty on foreign sugar from the West Indies. The Quartering Act of 1765 required colonists to provide food for the British troops who were settled in the colonial frontier.
